So, I'm rethinking blogs. First, here's what's happened since my last update:
On March 11, a new section was added to the Official Web site for "Motion Pictures," and the unofficial pilot for the new YouTube series I'm doing with my youth group, White Rock Youth was posted to the site a day after its YouTube/FaceBook release. This one was called "A Magical Adventure." It mostly consisted of me playing with a fox puppet ("Sparx" from Vacation Bible School last year) alone in my office and then figuring out the video editing software that I'd be using for the next episodes of the series. This series of short films was created by the 2009-'10 White Rock Youth Council to showcase our group and what we're all about. There are going to be silly episodes made just for fun, episodes that address topics we'll be discussing on Sunday evenings in our youth meetings, documentaries that offer a better look at some of our bigger events, and shorts that we make for our pastor to use in Sunday morning worship.
On April 3, the second episode of White Rock Youth called "Is the U.S. #1?" was posted on the site, six days after its YouTube debut. This one was a sampling of thoughts from the group on an upcoming discussion topic.
That same day, three new haikus (#s 88-90) were posted. I lose track of all the setbacks that have sprung up, from serious technical glitches to just no time or energy to get them posted with all the real life drama I'm subjected to on a daily basis.
Again, later that day, the third-released episode of White Rock Youth was added to the site. This one was titled "Mr. and Mrs. Sloth Take the Census." A group of us got together in my office and made this film Charlie Chaplin style, which means I had the basic story and some ideas how to pull it off, and we played around until it came together. It was tremendous fun! We made this one especially for the pastor's sermon o Sloth, and he showed a version that cut off after Matthew's second exit in church on March 28. The uncut version was released on YouTube two days later. This was our first skit with a plot! Considering we had no time for re-shoots and lost a scene or two from having the camera turned off when we though it was recording, I think it came off brilliantly. This is the fourth episode in production order. The third has yet to be released, because some of the footage is on one of the youth's cameras, and I'm waiting to edit it in.
Then there were the haikus! #91 went up on April 5, #92 went up on April 14, #93 went up on April 19, #94 went up on April 26, and #95 went up today, May 8. I am also going to say right now that #100 is not going to be the end of them. I wrote another ten some time back, and decided it was something I should leave open for myself to explore whenever the madness takes hold again.
Now, on to rethinking blogs! I've recently decided to try something different. I'm not sure exactly what for it will take yet. All I know is that I intend to start a wholly new blog in which to discuss whatever is on my mind, from world events to my challenge in finding a parking spot on the way to Yoga class this morning (Still feeling some residual road rage here). I know I had one sort of like this about six years back, but I want there to be a consistency to it, as with this one. I don't want readers to come into it and have to deal with a six year gap. I should start this new blog pretty soon. Probably within the week. I'll just have to come up with a title!
As for this blog, that's where my uncertainty lies. I may continue with it as is, and it will be there for the folks who want to know more about my work, either in addition to or instead of more about me, which would be the focus of the new blog. Alternatively, I may end this blog, and create numerous "production blogs" to be featured on various pages of the site relating to specific projects. This way, anyone who wanted to know how things were coming with the sequel to Cry, Wolf but couldn't care less whether I ever wrote another haiku, could go directly to the information they were after.
I'm just not sure. At 316 installments, "From the Author's Desk" is the longest running blog I've ever kept. I'm attached to it. It's just that it could be very tedious for readers not interested in the technical side of my work. It doesn't offer you any insights into my soul (well, maybe it does, but only nuggets), only what I'm working on, what's gone up on the site, all the droll details of working as an independent writer. Don't get me wrong. I am endlessly fascinated by these details and take great pleasure in reading over them from time to time. I'm just saying, maybe there is a more efficient way to do that, and to get myself across as well, write about other things, essays on matters that concern or interest me outside of publishing. It's a lot to think on. So what do you think? Send me an e-mail, let me know your thoughts. I do it all for you, you know. Every minute bit of it.
